Update: 12.28.2012

We've received a lot of emails asking for an update on Moses, so we thought it'd be a good time to fill everyone in on what's been going on...

Moses has grown into what we call his "teenage" phase. He's got the body of a full-grown cat, but still has the excitement and energy level of a kitten. And he's a little bit...umm...rebellious. We'd heard from others (who had adopted kittens that were orphaned at an early age) that they tend to have a bit of a wild streak when this is the case, and Moses is no exception. He can certainly be cute and sweet and cuddly...but in a matter of seconds can run across the room, jump, and latch on to your thigh like there's no tomorrow!

I know this may be a little hard for some of you to imagine, especially considering the tiny and adorable kitten that we all got to know in the beginning...but we still love him the same! And to be honest, we spend so much time chasing him around that we don't really get much time to make videos...and when we do, they're not always of the "cute and cuddly" nature.

So, with that said, here's a video of what Moses does when he's NOT being cute and cuddly!

UPDATE: 5.30.2012

Several people have asked for an update on Moses, and since we've only been posting videos, we figured it'd be a good time to do just that (and tell you about all the things we can't catch on camera.

Mo is growing EVERY day. We haven't weighed him, but we'd estimate 1-1.5 pounds. He's fearless, animated, and could eat his weight in food if we'd give it to him. He's finally been weaned from the bottle, and moved on to soft food. And he still climbs your pants leg when you ask if he's "hungry"!

He does all sorts of things you'd expect from a kitten (playing with string, jumping around playfully, and going from 100mph to dead asleep in an instant), but one of the coolest things has been seeing him interact with Lola (a 5-year-old lab mix). Even though they get along great and Lola takes care of him, she isn't always so gentle. She's rolled Mo over a few times (accidentally!) with a wayward paw, but he hops right up every time! She takes a very motherly role and keeps him in line. But she's SO patient...even when he jumps up and smacks her in the nose, she just keeps her head up and lets him go.

A few of you have mentioned that we should get him some toys his size, and we did. He loves them. Right now, our biggest chore is keeping them from becoming part of Lola's toy stash! We've got some videos of him wrestling and kicking a little stuffed dog, and I'll post that shortly.

Thank you all for all of your support, encouragement, and well-wishes. We're hitting the peak of the cute-phase, and we've got TONS of material to post that we haven't yet (we're too busy keeping up with the little guy!). Anyway, thanks again for believing in Moses, and for sharing his story with us and others. We've gotten some incredible emails from some amazing people, and some of your stories and comments have touched our hearts. We're lucky to be a part of something that is so heartwarming, encouraging, and reassuring.

GO MOSES!

Thank you, Ryan Adams (and Mandy Moore)!!!

Okay, this one blew us away. One of our favorite musicians, Ryan Adams, tweeted about Moses on Tuesday!

Also, you'll notice that his wife, Mandy Moore, mentions the Moses and Lola video! All the news coverage is great, but when you've got amazing people like Ryan and Mandy talking about a month-old kitty, it's mind-blowing! Thanks again, Ryan and Mandy!

Chive On!

Yesterday, the good people at our favorite website (TheChive.com) posted Moses's "Drinking from a Bottle" video, and the response has been overwhelming! We've received emails from all around the world encouraging and expressing their support for a 4-week-old kitten! We even got a re-post on a news site in Norway!

As for Moses, he's growing every day! He enjoys staying up all hours of the night, playing with Lola, and climbing on just about everything he can! All the comments, support, and subscriptions to Moses's youtube page have inspired us to post more photos and videos, so stay tuned! We're hoping Moses can be the first cat to have his entire life (from 4 days old) documented online!

Thanks again to everyone who has commented on youtube and sent letters of encouragement to Mo! He appreciates it, and so do we!

On the Move

Although a little stumbly at times, he's starting to walk pretty fast now...

Moses Makes Friends

He calmed down long enough to meet our friends Paul and Jason. His eyes are a beautiful blue, even though he can't always keep them focused.

First poop

Today was a monumental day for Moses: his first poop. We were really worried about it since he'd gone more than ten days without it, but the veterinarian said their "internal functions" can be slow developing, so we've been holding out hope that this day would come.

Moses remains calm as Mark demonstrates how the magic happens...

Learning to Walk

It's really more of a crawl, but he's getting somewhere!

And later that day, he's picking up speed!

Tickle, Tickle

How cute is this? Bobbi tickles Mo's belly and gets an adorable reaction! (at the 1:40 mark)

Drinking from a bottle

Feeding time! We opened up the hole on the bottle and he's doing much better with it.

Just being Noisy

Well, his eyes have opened, and he's as noisy as ever. Meg is enamored, and Lola (the dog) is a little jealous.

And here's some more noisiness...listen closely as Mark and Bobbi discuss how to "stimulate urination" at the end...

Moses is Hungry!

His eyes aren't open yet, but he's getting the hang of the syringe...

Wednesday, April 11, 2012

This is Moses.

Last Wednesday, a neighborhood stray cat was hit (and killed) by a car behind our house. Unfortunately, this cat was a new mother, and my neighbor had found her kitten in a nearby ditch and taken it to the animal shelter. He also said that a local veterinarian (who also lives in our neighborhood) was on his way to take the mother's body and bury it.

It was a sad scene, made even sadder by the thought of a newborn kitten with no mother. Assuming the situation had reached its conclusion, I left for a few hours.

But the story completely changed when Meg came home and heard a high-pitched squeal in the carport. She immediately called our friends, Bobbi and Mark, who came over to help investigate. After searching throughout the carport, Mark tracked the sound to a corner of the carport with a pile of firewood, a bail of hay, and assorted yard tools. He reached in behind the hay-bail, and found this:

Moses.

4 inches long, 4 ounces in weight, and the noisiest kitten you could imagine. His eyes were still closed, and no matter what we tried, we couldn't calm him down. We could tell he was hungry, so Mark and I left to find some kitten formula and a bottle. We read all sorts of things online about why it's important to keep him warm, and how to feed him to avoid making him sick.

But he wouldn't eat. It seemed as if the bottle was too big to fit in his mouth, and he just couldn't create enough suction to make it work.

So Bobbi and Mark decided they'd take Moses home, and continue to try to feed him throughout the night.

The next morning, Bobbi took him to the animal hospital. When the vet walked in, he looked at her wide-eyed and asked: "WHERE DID YOU GET THIS CAT?" Apparently, HE was the vet who'd buried the mother the day before! Anyway, he gave her some syringes to make feeding easier, and gave her plenty of advice on how to take care of him. One piece we all found particularly interesting is that you have to "stimulate" his "private areas" to make him go to the bathroom!

He also said for us to be "cautiously optimistic" about his chance of survival. Apparently, the next few weeks are critical for his survival. So even though we're trying not to get our hopes up for Little Moses, he is too adorable not to love!
